Stress in Hyperboloids under Edge Loadings

Publication: Journal of the Engineering Mechanics Division
Volume 91, Issue 4

Abstract

A solution of the bending of thin shells of revolution with negative Gaussian curvature is presented. This solution is derived from the general theory presented by E. Reissner and later developed by P. M. Naghdi and C. N. Da Silva. The behavior of hyperboloids of revolution under edge loading is described in detail. Experiments on a small-scale model are described, first under rotationally symmetrical loading and second under concentrated loading. The behavior under concentrated loading is treated in terms of Gol'denveizer's concepts and is compared with the Boussinesq solution for an edge load on a plate.
