Spherical Elastic Plastic Shock Propagation
Publication: Journal of the Engineering Mechanics Division
Volume 91, Issue 3
Abstract
The response of an infinite, elastic, perfectly plastic medium governed by the Von Mises yield condition is considered, containing a spherical cavity whose surface is subjected to a uniform time-dependent pressure applied suddenly. A spherically symmetric, elastic plastic shock configuration is proposed under the assumption of small strains. The response is obtained by finite-difference methods for pressure histories in which the applied stress has its peak value at the instant of application. The stress is sufficiently large for yielding to occur, and decays thereafter monotonically.
