Abstract
One-dimensional shock wave propagation and reflection phenomena in a nonlinear medium are investigated. The medium is of decreasing compressibility, its stress-strain curve has a general nonlinear character which on its loading branch is approximately an nth order parabola. Unloading occurs on a vertical branch, parallel with the stress axis. General wave and reflection equations are derived, taking into account large displacements and large density changes, and closed form solutions for special cases of interest are given. Conditions for various types of shock transmission and reflection are studied in a layered medium. The medium postulated in this paper approximates the behavior of certain porous materials and granular soils. Application to the prediction of ground shock effects caused by air induced nuclear blast is shown in the Appendix.
