Abstract
Principles used in limit analysis of plates and slabs are introduced and reviewed briefly; application of these principles is illustrated by an example. The yield line theory is examined in terms of limit analysis and is shown to give an upper bound on the collapse load of a reinforced concrete slab. Similarly, the equilibrium theory is studied and shown to give a lower bound on the collapse load of a slab. Results of the application of these theories to the limit design of complex slabs are outlined.
