Abstract
The dynamic response of a thick-walled cylinder embedded in an infinite elastic medium is determined due to the passage of plane harmonic shear waves. The basic parameters involved in the solution are the incident wave frequency, the cylinder's radii, and the elastic constants and density of the cylinder and medium. At certain incident wave frequencies, the predominant tangential stresses are found to be 10% to 20% greater than the corresponding static values. The maximum tangential stresses produced by the incident shear wave are 40% to 60% greater than those produced by a similar compressional wave.
