Abstract
The virtual mass of a sphere oscillating in a fluid filling a fixed concentric spherical shell was determined experimentally for seven ratios of sphere diameter to shell diameter. These ratios (d/D) varied between 0 and 0.864. For Reynolds numbers, fd2/ν (defined in terms of frequency of oscillation and sphere diameter), greater than 105, the added mass factor, K, of the sphere is independent of the Reynolds number and approaches a theoretically determined value, Ko, obtained by an analysis using potential flow theory. For Reynolds numbers less than 2 x 103 and for smaller values of the ratio d/D, the experimental values of the added mass factor ratio, K/Ko, approached those obtained from Stokes' theoretical solution for the virtual mass effects in a viscous fluid of infinite extent.
