Abstract
The postbuckling behavior of rectangular plates with two opposite edges free is studied. It is shown that classical plate theory leads to the development of boundary layers along the free edges. Although the remainder of the plate assumes a state of constant finite uniaxial compression, the boundary layers exhibit axial stresses that, in the limit, approach infinity. The nature of these boundary layers and their relationship to the effect of shear deformation is investigated. It is shown how variational principles can be used in the establishment of boundary conditions that are consistant with the differential equations associated with the various terms in an asymptotic perturbation expansion.
