Abstract
An attempt to explore the concepts involved in the use of kinematic methods to find the limit load for general rigid-plastic structures suggests, by analogy with well established procedures for plane frames loaded in plane, that two types of kinematically admissible velocity and strain rate fields are of particular significance: (1) Fields in which the associated stresses are in internal and external equilibrium but do not necessarily satisfy the yield condition; and (2) fields having the properties of (1) but having, in addition, a minimum number of degrees of freedom when considered purely kinematically. All fields of type (1) are shown to be elaborations of type (2). Because the solution for any particular problem is contained among fields of type (1), and because fields of type (2) are relatively easy to construct, a procedure for determining the limit load is suggested. Illustrative examples are drawn from transversely loaded grid structures, which are termed space frames by some authors.
