Meeting Future Surface Transportation Needs

Publication: Journal of the Highway Division
Volume 91, Issue 2

Abstract

A review of current transportation policies and developments reveals the future needs for surface transportation. Travel trends and projections indicate the importance of motor vehicle transportation in the future. This projection, when coupled with the various highway studies completed or being conducted, lead to the conclusion that freeways will continue to dominate highway construction. Interstate, statewide, and urban systems will be enlarged to convey the increased demand. Recently, through the stimulus provided by federal grants and loans, many urban areas are revitalizing mass transportation. A review of programs in four major cities indicates that more attention will be given to mass transportation and its coordination with freeway systems.
