Abstract
By using biokinetic and stoichiometric equations it was possible to theoretically develop insight into factors that affect nitrification rate in activated sludge systems. From this study it was shown that nitrifier fraction is not a constant and is dependent on mean cell residence time and the influent COD:TKN ratio, and the percentage of nitrifiers present in an activated sludge biomass does not have an effect on the rate of nitrification.
