Remedial Actions for Open Dumps

Publication: Journal of the Environmental Engineering Division
Volume 107, Issue 6

Abstract

Remedial technologies are available to upgrade or close landfills that have been classified as open dumps. The aim of upgrading is to achieve a level of operation under which the facility can be classified as a sanitary landfill. A facility may be classified as a sanitary landfill.—.—. only if there is no reasonable probability of adverse affects on health or the environment from disposal of solid waste at such facility. Explanations are given of soil cover, grading, surface drainage, ground water control systems, and gas control system. Technologies which have been applied to solid waste management facilities or to similar applications are emphasized. A thorough knowledge of a facility relative to each criterion is required before selecting or applying remedial technologies. Some of the available technologies and a general discussion of their application are presented.
