Abstract
This paper considers the problem of placing a rectangular array of sedimentation plates in a circular or rectangular tank. Because of the fixed area of the tank, an optimal relationship exists between the angle of inclination of the plates and their length. By assuming laminar flow of the liquid and a dilute suspension, the desired relationship is derived. It is found that the best design for vertical upflow is approx. 30? from the vertical with the appropriate optimal length. The requisite relationships for horizontal and downflow configurations are also presented.
