River Temperature Variation with Freezing and Storage

Publication: Journal of the Environmental Engineering Division
Volume 104, Issue 5

Abstract

Water temperature in the northern part of the United States is significantly affected by the freezing phenomenon. Because of the freezing constraint on the variability of water temperature, there is a good correlation between the mean value and the fluctuating component. The probability density curve of water temperature variation develops a sharp peak near the freezing point. A stochastic model using two independent variables, air temperature variation and the mean daily water temperature, is developed. It is also shown that the water temperature variability tends to decrease as a dimensionless reservoir storage capacity decreases.
