Abstract
The completely mixed activated sludge process is examined from the viewpoint of process stability. A theoretical basis to determine the process stability is presented. The process stability is characterized in terms of the process response and the transient concentration of soluble effluent substrate. It is shown that the process response is a function of solids retention time and hydraulic detention time; their relative influence can be identified. It is also shown that the transient concentration of soluble effluent substrate is dependent upon solids retention time and influent substrate concentration. The importance of design to activated sludge process stability was stressed.
