Virus-Coal Sorption Interaction
Publication: Journal of the Environmental Engineering Division
Volume 102, Issue 6
Abstract
An investigation was made on the sorption interaction of coal and a model virus, bacterial virus MS2 versus Escherichia coli. Bituminous coal was useful as a sorbent for removing viruses from water. Virus sorption increased with ionic strength and temperature, and decreased with increasing pH. Sorption data fit the Langmuir equation and could be described by irreversible second-order reaction kinetics. Viruses sorbed exclusively on the exterior surface of coal and virus sorption on coal involved some specific interaction, presumably hydrogen bonding, between the surface functional groups of virus and coal.
