Design and Management of Air Monitoring Surveys

Publication: Journal of the Environmental Engineering Division
Volume 102, Issue 4

Abstract

Comprehensive planning and management of ambient air monitoring surveys are required to assure that prescribed objectives can be attained in the shortest possible time and at the least cost. A well-designed survey considers the network and station specifications in terms of the objective of the survey and the physical parameter to be measured. Interaction between air monitoring and diffusion models for the systematic selection of air monitoring sites is identified. Mesoscale and microscale surveys are identified and specific site selection criteria for each type survey provided. The requirements for spatial and temporal resolution of air pollution concentration are related to survey objectives and cost.
