Abstract
Sludge dewatering is examined and treated as a flow of liquid (filtrate) through a nonrigid (deforming) saturated flocculent porous medium. A flocculent porous medium model is developed and its one-dimensional mathematical description is presented. It is necessary to know two physical characteristics of sludge to use this model for the description of sludge dewatering; the modulus of linear compressibility (consolidation characteristic) and the hydraulic conductivity (filtration characteristic). The feasibility of their measurement is demonstrated in the experimental portion of the paper.
