Landfill Disposal of Liquid Sewage Sludge
Publication: Journal of the Environmental Engineering Division
Volume 101, Issue 1
Abstract
This report presents results of a 3 yr demonstration study of disposing liquid sewage sludge and septic tank pumpings into a solid waste sanitary landfill. The study was performed in four phases: (1) laboratory bench-scale analyses; (2) laboratory lysimeter tests; (3) large-scale field tests at the Oceanside, Calif. landfill; and (4) full-scale disposal of all Oceanside sewage sludge to its landfill. All four phases demonstrated that solid waste has sufficient absorptive capacity to retain moisture, without runoff. Full-scale landfill sludge disposal at Oceanside resulted in no leachate generation during the course of the study, and was economically competitive with other sludge disposal alternatives. Environmental benefits of combined sludge-solid waste landfilling included increased landfill compaction, greater density, and reduced blowing litter and dust. Environmental problems encountered were odors following septic tank pumpings and raw sewage disposal and extensive bird foraging. Disposing raw sewage or septic tank pumpings to solid waste landfills was not recommended unless special protection measures are instituted, such as underdrains for leachate and runoff collection.
