Abstract
An innovative and improved collection and treatment system for Naval vessels has been developed. The system utilizes: (1)a recirculating chemical toilet for collection and storage of fecal wastes under highly concentrated conditions; and (2) an evaporative system for liquid/solid separation. A detailed experimental program was conducted to establish the design and operating criteria for the recirculating toilet and an evaporative system. The condensate from the evaporative system is sterile and after chlorination meets all effluent criteria established for this program. The effluent quantity is also reduced from 26.2 gal (0.1 m³) per man-day (characteristic of conventional once-through toilet) to less than 1 gal (0.004 m³) per man-day.
