Abstract
Chemical reactor concepts are applied to the design of postchlorination facilities. The postchlorination process is considered as a multicomponent, open system where several parallel, competing reactions occur simultaneously but with different rates. The rates of these reactions determine the effect of the various components of the effluent on the chlorination process, the holding times needed, and the size and number of chlorine contact tanks necessary. Theoretical considerations and experimental results are presented, verifying the importance of kinetics as design criteria for postchlorination.
