Vibration Identification in Rotating Equipment

Publication: Journal of the Energy Division
Volume 107, Issue 2

Abstract

The principal causes of vibrations in rotating machinery are discussed with particular attention given to the condition of resonance and how it affects a machine-foundation unit. Experimental procedures are outlined which will guide the engineer in determining the cause of vibration in a rotating machine. A case study is presented which involves an induced draft fan in a power plant, a retrofit situation, and a resonance situation. The procedure which was used to determine the cause of the excessive vibration is discussed and the structural modifications required on the foundation to eliminate the problem are given.
