Wet Disposal of Fossil Plant Waste Case History
Publication: Journal of the Energy Division
Volume 107, Issue 2
Abstract
Fossil fueled electric generating plants produce large volumes of solid waste in the form of fly ash, bottom ash, and depending on the coal burned, SO2 scrubber sludge. The disposal of these wastes have become an environmental concern requiring engineered disposal systems. A case history of the design, construction and performance of a wet ponding disposal facility is presented. Wet ponding may be an appropriate disposal system if the geotechnical evaluation of the site conditions demonstrate that seepage can be controlled by incorporating in-site materials into the pond seal. The case history includes a discussion of the alternate disposal systems considered, the scope and intent of the field and laboratory investigation programs, the major design considerations, the construction of the seepage features, the performance monitoring program, and the recorded performance of the operating facility.
