Direct Explicit Formulation for Approach to Wet Bulb
Publication: Journal of the Energy Division
Volume 105, Issue 1
Abstract
The Merkel equation is solved using numerical techniques. The input parameters are adjusted to render solutions over the normal range of operating conditions. The analytical results based upon the use of the simulation model are fitted using a least-squares regression analysis. A power series expression is developed which explicitly relates the approach to wet bulb in terms of cooling range, a dimensionless mass transfer coefficient, wet bulb temperature, and a dimensionless liquid to air flow ratio. The power expression was found to fit the calculated input data to within 5% (normally 1°;F to 2°F).
