Use of Extensometers at Palo Verde Nuclear Station
Publication: Journal of the Construction Division
Volume 107, Issue 1
Abstract
The use of rod-type multiple-position extensometers (strainmeters) was made at a nuclear power plant site in southern Arizona. The instruments were installed at various depths and prior to excavations for the structures within the powerblock. Deformations were monitored during excavation for soil rebound due to release of overburden stresses and later for settlements during and after the load applications. A good correlation is obtained with other monitoring equipment used. The instrumentation provides continuous monitoring of soil deformations with remote readout capability. The installation and monitoring of the instrument is described.
