Abstract
A comprehensive construction material management system is presented for accomplishing the task of getting material to the work area. The objective of the system is to tie together traditional construction management techniques of scheduling and equipment selection with current tools used in industrial engineering approaches to material management; all with the purpose of putting materials into the hands of the craftsmen at the right place and at the right time. The paper covers scheduling aspects of material control and describes a work breakdown system that contributes to construction material management at a large heavy construction project. The method of determining delivery and lifting equipment requirements is also detailed. Access planning is covered. Performance of the system operations is briefly reviewed.
