Tunnel and Shaft Sealing Methods Using Polyvinyl Chloride Sheet
Publication: Journal of the Construction Division
Volume 102, Issue 1
Abstract
This report decribes a newly developed sealing method for tunnels and shafts showing many advantages, such as the possibility of sealing on a wet and rough surface and the tight fixation of the placed sealing cover. By using compressed air, this sealing method allows an objective test of the butt joints with regard to water-tightness and mechanical density. It has been used with great success on various Swiss and Austrian tunnel and shaft projects, including: (1) Ventilation-Shaft Lerche near Dortmund (Germany); (2) vertical ventilation-shaft of the Gotthard highway tunnel (longest tunnel in the world); (3) vertical ventilation-shaft Tauern-Tunnel, greatest shaft of the world, for the Salzburg-Villach highway; (4) vertical ventilation shaft Hattig for the Seelisberg tunnel, connection of the Swiss National Highway Basel-Chiasso; (5) underground railway Vienna; and (6) city railway Frankfurt a.M.
