Abstract
If the construction industry is to comply with OSHA standards for trenching operations, it must develop a thorough understanding of the requirements. The results of an extensive review of the excavation and trenching standards are presented. The interpretation of these standards are made based on (1) A review of the current literature; (2) oral opinions expressed by OSHA officials at the area and regional level; and (3) court interpretations resulting from appeals of OSHA citations.
