Half Century of USBR Arch Dam Construction

Publication: Journal of the Construction Division
Volume 101, Issue 2

Abstract

The Bureau of Reclamation has been designing and constructing arch dams since its inception in 1902. The designs have evolved from the fairly massive structures to the thin double-curvature structures of today. This in turn has stimulated advances in construction procedures such as concrete manufacture, transportation, and placement. Important developments in concrete technology were made during this time. Several dams that typify Bureau progress in the last 50 yr are also reviewed.
