Abstract
Motivation of construction craftsmen could prove to be a great boon in the fight to keep down the cost growth of construction production. Scientific management principles as applied to construction have resulted in more effective field labor management. The expansion of this state of the art could profitably be in the area of motivation. A theoretical background for worker motivation is given from the work of behavioral science. Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs is related to the construction environment. A basic format for construction industry motivation is developed and then applied in the form of a sample motivation program for a medium-sized project.
