Abstract
The General Conditions of the Contract for Construction (Document A 201) published by the American Institute of Architects (Commonly known as the AIA General Conditions) is one of the most widely used standard forms in building and construction contracts. First published in 1911, the document was extensively revised in the Eleventh Edition. September, 1967. When first requested by the American Institute of Architects to comment upon a draft of the proposed new edition in 1965, the Committee on Contract Administration undertook a detailed analysis of the document which was updated after final publication. The Committee presents recommendations for amendment of fifteen and special consideration of three of the document's one hundred thirty subparagraphs. A commentary is provided for each recommended amendment, setting forth the Committee's criteria. The purpose of the Committee's report is to serve as a basis for further discussion of the AIA General Conditions within the construction industry and as a starting point for persons who seek to modify the General Conditions for use as part of their own contract documents.
