Anticipated Foundation Movement Affects Design

Publication: Journal of the Construction Division
Volume 93, Issue 2

Abstract

Anticipated foundation movements resulting from removal of heavy overburden loads from overconsolidated soils initiated special considerations of construction sequence and structural details for Dos Amigos Pumping Plant in California. Progressive unloading and reloading of the foundation is controlled by the construction specifications for this 13,200 cfs pumping plant. The possibility of relatively large differential movements across building expansion joints and between the structure and the discharge pipeline foundation is recognized. Special details for embedded pipe and conduit are developed to provide articulation across the building expansion joints. Articulation of the discharge pipeline between the building and the pipeline foundation is also developed.
