Abstract

The design of concrete formwork and other temporary wood structures is made with the same basic criteria as for permanent construction. From a practical standpoint, there are a number of situations which often occur in formwork but rarely in buildings. These situations are given little consideration in standard textbooks and in writings on structural design. Formwork design is not subject to standardized building codes, and formwork designers are usually not practicing structural engineers. Design criteria affected by these special circumstances are examined and existing literature is summarized.
