Installation Procedure for Hot Metal Facility

Field experience demonstrates that construction ingenuity and critical path scheduling work well together to complete the installation of a hot metal facility on time. Special attention is given to the handling and installation of the hot blast cupola, which is the heart of this facility. The cupola is followed from the fabricating yard to its final location in an existing hot metal producing plant. Because the new cupola replaces an operational one and uses the same foundation, a plant shutdown is required for the final phases of construction. Critical path scheduling is used as the tool to plan and control all steps of the project from the engineering stage through the construction stage. Control was enhanced by a reporting system that used IBM cards as a reporting media to management.
