PERT and CPM Techniques in Project Management

Publication: Journal of the Construction Division
Volume 90, Issue 1

Abstract

An integrated approach to PERT and CPM is presented underlining the basic concepts. The fundamental model can be visualized as a network in which points or nodes correspond to events and arrows correspond to activities. This model is also convenient in expressing the sequence and interrelationships existing in a project. The mathematics and the mechanics of the network analysis as it is applied to critical path computations are developed and illustrated. Recent developments in areas of cost optimization and cost-time integration have been considered. A simplified highway construction project is presented to illustrate the application of PERT and CPM techniques in which the concepts of the work breakdown structure and the account code structure are also incorporated.
