Long Range Potential of VTOL Aircraft

Abstract
The application of VTOL (Vertical Takeoff and Landing) to short haul aircraft, supersonic transports, and space launchers are described. VTOL potential as a means of providing a new and effective major transportation system is evaluated. It is shown that the control characteristics of these aircraft are such that routine, all-weather operations will be possible with a high degree of safety. The economic factors determining ticket costs are analyzed. A comparison of various VTOL aircraft configurations is presented together with an evaluation of their relative operational advantages. It is shown that VTOL also shows promise for long range supersonic transports and increases the feasibility of a hypersonic transport. Finally, the improvements in launch capabilities with a VTOL launch vehicle for space flights are described and the costs of a reusable, air breathing, VTOL booster are compared with more conventional booster concepts.
