Engineering Education: Computer Design of Plants
Publication: Issues in Engineering: Journal of Professional Activities
Volume 107, Issue 2
Abstract
Teaching civil engineering design courses is important and difficult. Civil engineering faculty are usually better prepared to teach the theoretical and scientific aspects of civil engineering. A design course, emphasizing wastewater treatment plant design, is proposed. The course makes extensive use of the computer design program developed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, called CAPDET. A brief introduction to CAPDET is included, along with an explanation to how CAPDET is effectively integrated into the design course. CAPDET has proven to be an effective educational tool, and is recommended to other civil engineering educators as a means of improving substantially design courses that emphasize wastewater treatment.
