Abstract
There is a tendency in this bicentennial to review the past 200 years and speculate about the future. We should examine what the past has brought and what the future might bring to the engineering profession from the Society's viewpoint, the viewpoint of the entire profession, and, most importantly, the viewpoint of young engineers and the public. This paper raises certain questions and presents observations that are vital to the future careers of all engineers, as well as to the profession itself. The intrusion of outside forces on the engineer's professional judgment, the awkward position of the engineer in the current hierarchy, and the role of professional organizations are all considered.
