Abstract
A presentation is given by the President of the ASCE at the Second ASCE Specialty Conference on Structural Design of Nuclear Power Plant Facilities. An underlying interest of ASCE and all thinking groups and individuals these days is a solution to the energy problem of today and the future. Most experts agree that coal and uranium must take precedence from oil and gas as fuels for the generation of electrical energy in the U.S. Indeed, the most generally accepted philosophy is not an either-or matter, but a realization that the U.S. needs the Alaska pipeline, it needs gas and oil exploration and development, it needs coal-fired powerplants and it needs nuclear power as well. Our principal concern has to be the design of safe and economical nuclear plants. Safety and cost are inseparable factors, and should determine the future of nuclear plants.
