Motivation of Students Towards Professional Thinking
Publication: Engineering Issues: Journal of Professional Activities
Volume 101, Issue 3
Abstract
Though engineering has substantially improved civilized life, it still has many faults attributable to widespread lack of professionalism in engineering practice. Education in professionalism at the engineering school level has largely been neglected. It can and should be taught by various means, including: good examples in faculty members' and student chapter advisors' actions; recognition, by school administrators and by ECPD accrediting teams, of existence or absence of professionalism education and example; and by rigorous use of honor systems. Painless instruction can be achieved by use of a game plan approach, requiring exposure to, and rap sessions on real cases of professional problems and paradoxes during student chapter sessions. Here, motivation by chapter advisory personnel would be very important.
