Using Technology to Solve Environmental Problems

Publication: Engineering Issues: Journal of Professional Activities
Volume 100, Issue 4

Abstract

Technology is discussed in relation to environmental quality problems, both from a historical perspective and from current analysis points of view. The way in which technology has become an integral and inseparable part of our life and social system is examined. Specific discussion relates to the weaknesses and assumptions involved in recent writings and computer models which portend doom—without any analysis of the potential of properly directed future technology to solve environmental problems. The role of technology in a perceived steady-state society and the possibilities of some future technologies for solving problems are presented.
