Professionalism in Construction
Publication: Engineering Issues: Journal of Professional Activities
Volume 99, Issue 2
Abstract
The expanding complexity of technology in buildings, increased design sophistication, and need for total project responsibility is demanding more comprehensive and professional construction management services to control quality, cost, and time and to be more responsive to society's needs. This paper explains the specialized aspects of the construction service and compares the principal characteristics of professionalism with the qualifications and conduct of the constructor person. The criteria for professionalism including expert knowledge, autonomy and freedom to communicate, authority, an altruistic or public-service motivation, a learned technical society and a code of ethics, licensing and registration requirements, client orientation, the colleague community and peer control, public recognition and trust, collective identity, and other similar considerations were particularly studied in the context of the new technologies and today's social, economic, and political changes.
