Prospectives in Bioengineering Research for Civil Engineers
Publication: Engineering Issues: Journal of Professional Activities
Volume 97, Issue 1
Abstract
The essential objective of civil engineering to provide a physical environment for man requires the creation of increasingly effective tools for modifying the natural environment and improving the man-made environment in our houses, vehicles, and schools. It also requires a knowledge of man and what is desirable for him, not only in social terms, but also in terms of his physiological capabilities and limitations. On either account, an engineering oriented view of biological processes–a view described by the term bioengineering–holds a pivotal role. This paper describes the opportunity that civil engineers can contribute, through the development of bioengineering techniques, to almost every aspect of medical practice and research.
