Abstract

Expressions are derived for the pressures and forces on a large vertical cylinder due to diffraction of Stokes' second-order wave. The flow is taken to be irrotational and the cylinder assumed to be rigidly fixed to the bottom with its top above the free surface. With a perturbation method, the nonlinear terms in the free surface boundary conditions are taken into account in obtaining the scattered potential. The results of the nonlinear theory were found to show a better agreement with experimental results than that of the linear diffraction theory.
