Abstract

Stokes' linear irrotational wave theory is employed to obtain expressions for wave forces on submerged objects of symmetry, e.g., a hemisphere or a sphere, a horizontal halfcylinder or cylinder, a vertical cylinder, and a rectangular block for objects whose dimensions are small compared to the wave length. The incident undisturbed wave is considered in the evaluation and the Froude-Krylov forces are obtained in simple closed forms. A multiplier, called the horizontal or vertical force coefficient, is included in each expression to account for the diffraction of waves from the body of the submerged object. The appropriate values of these coefficients are investigated by analyzing the experimental data on wave forces on these objects collected from various authorities. Based on the mean calculated values of these coefficients, the analytical prediction forces compared favorably with the experimentally measured data.
