Navigation Model Tests for Straight Reach of Missouri River
Publication: Journal of the Waterways, Harbors and Coastal Engineering Division
Volume 98, Issue 2
Abstract
The degree of channel confinement and extent of construction needed to develop a stable 9 ft by 300 ft (2.7 m by 91.4 m), navigation channel through the Kansas City Reach of the Missouri River was the object of a model study conducted at the Corps of Engineers Missouri River Division Hydraulic Laboratory. Developing and maintaining a navigation channel throughout a long, flat bend or a straight reach is a continuing problem for the river design engineer. The movable bed model study was conducted to assist the engineer in devising a system of structures that will develop and maintain a suitable navigation channel. Many systems of dikes were tested and a satisfactory solution was found.
