Abstract
The German North-Sea coast consists of low lying land. In past centuries land loss and reclamation formed the coastline, which was fixed by sea dikes. The catastrophic storm flood of 1962 caused severe damages to the dike system. The phenomenon of rising storm flood levels has to be considered in the computation of future crest height of dikes. Practical experience with dike slopes in 1962 are considered. Flatter profiles of sea dikes especially on the inside are necessary to make them more resistant to wave uprush, impact, and wave overtopping during the short period of the maximum tide of an unexpected high storm flood. Design criteria should consider grass cover; and subsoil. Recommendations are given relative to dike foreland; land reclamation; and structures on and inside dikes.
