Offshore Floating Terminals
Publication: Journal of the Waterways, Harbors and Coastal Engineering Division
Volume 97, Issue 3
Abstract
Various types of floating terminals are used for transferring materials from ocean-going vessels to conveyances for bringing them ashore. Historical types of terminals, lightering, boat transfer, sea-berths, and buoy terminals are reviewed and illustrated. Current state-of-the-art, with particular reference to the oil industry, includes bow moorings, semisubmersibles, and hulks used for storage. New concepts are developing rapidly. They involve various decoupling systems to improve stability under wave action, underwater components, floating piers, with or without associated storage structures. Environmental concerns make it necessary to minimize the risk of spillage in future designs, but economics will force further development in offshore terminals and advances in their design.
