Water Depths Required for Ship Navigation
Publication: Journal of the Waterways, Harbors and Coastal Engineering Division
Volume 97, Issue 3
Abstract
One of seven reports on ship channels, the report on water depths required for ship navigation outlines current data availability and design criteria, and stresses the need for future research to aid the navigation planning of safe and economic ship channels in restricted waterways. Methods now used to quantify such factors influencing ship movement in restricted waters, such as vessel sinkage or squat, are presented. There is a general lack of data for the common design condition in which a ship moves in a channel located in an estuary of irregular shape. Similarly, little is known of the effects on ship movement in channels of depths only 10% greater than the ship's draft.
