Economic Channels and Maneuvering Areas for Ships
Publication: Journal of the Waterways, Harbors and Coastal Engineering Division
Volume 97, Issue 3
Abstract
ASCE has established a Task Committee to investigate and report on the engineering of safe, adequate, and economic channels and maneuvering areas for ships. The Committee proposes to prepare seven progress reports on its work. The first of these is in the nature of an introduction to the problem. It describes in general terms the state of knowledge and the effects of deficiencies thereof, and it concludes that is inadequate, and stresses the importance of developing new knowledge. Subsequent reports will go into more detail on several aspects of the problem: economics; effects of external forces (waves, currents, winds) on vessel handling; vessel controllability; required channel depths, widths, and alignment; and water waves produced by ships in motion.
