Measured Performance of a Laboratory Culvert
Publication: Journal of the Geotechnical Engineering Division
Volume 108, Issue 12
Abstract
This study shows that the behavior of a soil culvert system can be modeled by a linear finite element program and a mathematical solution of a hole in an elastic sheet reinforced by a concentric ring. The finite element program produced equivilant computations as the mathematical solution. The results of the theoretical calculations were compared to the measured behavior of a 6.6-in. (167.6-mm) diameter instrumented culvert installed in a laboratory testing tank. The comparison between the theoretical and actual behavior correlated well. Parameter studies were done to show the influence of variations of Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio of the soil on the culvert response.
